5 Style Secrets

Awesome Tips by Lena Pentecarlo

PROTECTED: YOUR SIGN UP EXTRA – FIVE STYLE SECRETS!

Hello gorgeous! It’s great to have you here!
My goal is to help you improve your image and style easily. To get you started, I want to share these 5 quick secrets that you can start using today.
You will discover easy and essential tips that can help you dramatically improve your image and style, starting right now.
Let’s dig in!

1. The secret the fashion industry doesn’t want you to know

Here’s one question I get a lot: “Is this still in fashion?”
That’s where this secret makes all the difference. It will help you know which pieces you can wear from one season to the other, without buying fashion magazines, see fashion photos, etc.
So, what’s the secret? Here it is:
Fashion trends are trendy for at least two to three years.
I heard this for the first time in my styling course. That’s where I started to understand better the fashion world, and specifically, how trends work.
Of course that magazines speak about what’s In and Out and sometimes say that something you bought last year is already Out. But one magazine can say one thing and the other the opposite!
The truth is that if you bought a piece one, two or even three years ago, you can be sure that you can still wear it and it’s still in.
Good news right?
And there are many pieces that you’ll be able to wear a lot more time then 2 to 3 years. For example, ankle boots and skinny pants are two trends that are here to stay, and have been trendy for a lot of years now.

What does this “trend timeline” mean for your closet?

  1. You’ll be able to spend a lot less money on clothes and get more wear from every piece you buy.
  2. You can shop your closet to find more pieces to wear… because they aren’t out of fashion, after all!
  3. You’ll finally feel better about buying trendy pieces, because you can wear them for at least two to three years. And if it’s a great trend, possibly longer!

Take Some Action

Maybe you have some great pieces in your closet that you don’t wear because you’re afraid that they’re already out of fashion. If that’s the case, and you bought them less then 3 years ago, start wearing them again, with no fear!

2. Fit is Key

Have you noticed how celebrities always tailor their red carpet dresses specifically to their bodies?
That’s because you can’t look great if you’re not wearing the right size for your body…
And buying the wrong size is a common mistake.
The problem?
When you wear clothes that are too tight or too large you immediately loose proportion and beauty.
fit is key

If your clothes are too tight you won’t be able to move well and you will feel uncomfortable. On top of that, your clothes won’t flatter you and they will show all your body defects – any fat, bump, or disproportion.
So, should you wear large clothes? No!
Because clothes that are too large will make you look fatter and larger if you have some extra pounds or slimmer if you are too slim (you will “disappear” under your clothes).
So the key is to always wear your own size.
And if the item you’re trying on doesn’t seem to fit, you can have it tailored exactly to your body (for example, if pants are too tight on your legs, buy a larger size and then tighten them on the waist)

How do you know if a piece is your size?

Actually it’s pretty easy, here’s a quick guide for tops, pants and skirts.
Tops and Outerwear
The most important thing to watch for is your shoulder seam (the seam between the shirt and the arm): it must start where the shoulder ends (where it begins to curve down into your arm). If you’re trying on a dropped-shoulder style, the seam should hang no more than an inch or two down the arm.
You should also be able to move your arms easily – to make sure, cross your arms in front of you and raise them overhead.
Pants
For tailored pants, it’s best to buy a size bigger than your usual size, so they aren’t too tight on your butt – it won’t look elegant. It’s better if your pants are a bit loose on the butt than too tight.
For skinny jeans and pants, they should be really tight. So try buying skinny jeans and pants with some elasticity, so you feel comfortable with all that tightness. ;)
Skirts
You also need to be careful about the size of pencil or straight skirts. Again they shouldn’t be too tight because it won’t look elegant. It’s best to go to the next larger size and then have it tailored on the waist and anywhere else needed.

Take some action

Go through your closet and toss everything that isn’t your size. Give everything to a friend or relative. And when you go shopping, follow these guidelines to always buy the right size.

3. It Should LOOK Expensive

Let me rephrase that: It should look expensive, but it doesn’t need to be expensive.
You might think that you need to buy expensive pieces to look amazing, but that isn’t true at all. You can find fabulous pieces, that actually look very expensive (but aren’t!) in regular stores.
Actually what you need to know is what makes a piece look good or expensive, so you can go into any store and get an amazing piece for a reasonable price.
look expensive2
One good way to know if an item looks expensive or not is to go to designer labels and expensive stores, and see how the products they sell look. You need to pay special attention to the details, because they make all the difference.
Another way is to know what usually makes a piece look expensive. One of the most important factors is the fabric. Some fabrics are usually expensive and they’re considered chic/lux fabrics, because they have a certain touch, shine or resistance to time. For example, satin or silk, leather, fur, cashmere, are all considered lux fabrics but really, you can buy them at a great price, depending on the store you go to get them.
Other fabrics are considered casual or even sporty, like cotton, or of low quality like polyester. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy cotton, it just means that to avoid looking too casual, like a teenager, or too frumpy, you just need to combine the casual fabrics with more chic ones.

When you’re creating your outfits, pay attention to the different fabrics of the pieces you’re going to wear. Then try to combine casual fabrics with chicer fabrics, so you look more sophisticated instead of very casual (which sometimes can lead to frumpy…).

4. Accessories Change Everything

The pieces that can change your outfit in an instant, and make the most difference in how you look are your accessories, especially your bag and shoes.
The right accessories can make an outfit as easily as the wrong accessories can break it.
Why?
Because accessories stand out, even when they are small. That’s why you should be extra careful about how you choose and wear them.
Start by investing in a good looking leather bag and fashionable (or classic) shoes, because they’re items you wear a lot and that will make you look & feel put together and powerful, or not.
Now, any outfit can go to the next level with the right bag and shoes, but you can go one step further with other accessories like jewelry, hats, belts, and so on.
Jewelry can go out of fashion so be careful when choosing it. If you don’t know what to wear or buy, get inspired on fashion magazines and fashion blogs. Then look for similar pieces in your favorite stores.

Accessorizing Made Easy

Your outfit should have only one main focal point, so use these easy tips to find the right balance of eye catching accessories.
For example, never wear a big necklace, big earrings and a bunch of bracelets. It’s too much and it won’t look good.
So if you’re wearing a big necklace avoid earrings or go for little earrings. You can also add some bracelets. If you’re wearing big earrings you can combine them with lots of bracelets. And if you’re wearing a large belt avoid big necklaces – the belt should be getting all the attention.
As a rule of thumb, big, eye catching accessories should stand 8 inches (or 20 cm) apart from each other. This keeps your outfit from becoming a big mess when you want a gorgeous look!
“Before leaving the house, a lady should stop, look in the mirror, and remove one piece of jewelry.” Coco Chanel

One of the most fun accessories to have are great shoes. If you haven’t bought trendy shoes lately, or if you don’t have the timeless shoes, here’s what you can do:
  • Invest in timeless shoes: ballet flats, stilettos, pumps
  • Pick up some trendy shoes you can’t get enough of! Browse through fashion magazines and look for the shoes of the season and then buy one of those cool pairs that you love. Not only will you wear them again and again, but you’ll instantly be more stylish.
When you want to wear a eye catching accessory, keep the rest of the outfit and
accessories discreet, so your outfit just has one main focal point.

5. Want the top secret, most important way to know you look gorgeous?

The most important thing for looking your best is not your body, your face or your clothes. Have you guessed it already?
The most important thing to pay attention to when you want to look and feel gorgeous is your hair.
I will say it again because that’s how important this concept is to your personal image: The most important part of looking great is taking care of your hair!
If your hair isn’t a modern and up to date style, or if it doesn’t look healthy and shiny it just won’t look good.
And if your hair doesn’t look good, everything else will look wrong. Even if you have the cutest outfit, it just won’t shine.
That’s why the best investment for your style money is in your hair: buy good hair products, a good hair dryer, flat or curling iron. Or if you just can’t get your hair beautiful at home, get a professional blow dry during your week.

Not in love with your cut? Here are some ideas to get a hairstyle you feel great about.
  • If you don’t love your haircut, call a friend that has a haircut you love and ask for her stylist’s contact information. You can even ask for recommendations from your social media networks.
  • If you have a pretty good idea of what you like, browse through some magazines or Pinterest and choose pictures of the hairstyles you like. Then go to the salon and ask for a fashionable haircut, and show the pictures you like best for inspiration.
  • Ask your hairstylist about how you can style your hair at home. Your hair is one of your most important “fashion accessories” and if you can style it well it will just keep looking beautiful!
  • Your hairstylist can also recommend the best products for your hair – buy them; the best products can keep your hair looking beautiful everyday!

Makeup Tips

8 Beauty Secrets from Marilyn Monroe's Makeup Artist

1. Use vaseline as a primer and highlighter.

While trading in your featherlight moisturizer for petroleum jelly is a perplexing premise, this was always Monroe's base before applying her foundation. She loved it because it was ultimate moisturizer, and to her moisture was the essence of youth. Plus, combined with her signature peach fuzz, it gave her a soft focus glow under the studio lights. Snyder would also use the jelly as a highlighter, applying it to the cheekbones and brow bones for sheen.

2. Use five different shades to contour lips.

In pursuit of a naturally plumped-up pout, we tried this ourselves using Snyder's signature technique: darker reds on the outer corners and lighter shades in the middle to add dimension. Then, we topped things off by using highlighter on the cupid's bow and bottom lip. For an easy step-by-step, see our story here.

3. Swipe on a drop of oil for glistening lids.

Whether it's a dab of Vaseline or drop of coconut oil, Monroe was a firm believer that shiny lids were sexy. And thus, Snyder would dab some onto her lids for a subtle, wet-look finish.

4. Use the Greta Garbo's eyeshadow trick.

Monroe literally called it the "Greta Garbo eye," as the silent screen star was the one who originally blended white eye shadow on the lids all the way up to the brow bone and into the inner corners to add more depth.

5. Mix a combination of black, brown, white, and red eyeliners.

For quick, everyday slashes of eyeliner, most women are either brown or black pencil kinds of girls. But Snyder used a combination of both on Monroe, using Elizabeth Arden's classic eye pencils in both hues. He applied liner to her upper lids and waterlines, extending the lash lines with wings to elongate.
But his most important trick? Sketching out a small white triangle on the outer corner of the eye, in between the top and lower liner wings, to make her eyes look bigger and wider. Additionally, he drew white on the waterlines and put a dot if red liner in the inner corner to make her eyes look even whiter.

6. Use blush to contour the nose.

While we're well-versed in the art of using blush to contour our faces, it was Whitey who did it first. To shape Monroe's nose, he would tap a little bit of the pinky blush he used to contour her cheeks on the tip of her nose. The results? The illusion of shorter, more defined nose.

7. Cut your false eyelashes in half.

Monroe wanted her lashes longer and more voluminous with help from fringy falsies, but with natural-looking results. Therefore, Snyder would cut her false eyelash strips in half and apply them only to the outer corners of her eyes.

8. Shape your eyebrows with peaks.

While eyebrows shape is a very individual characteristic, if you want your arches to channel Monroe's, make like Whitey by drawing in peaks, which Monroe believed helped minimize the wideness of her forehead. But be careful—you don't want them to appear to sharp or pointy.
